In 1473AD Princess Edeloyo became the first and only woman in the history of Benin Kingdom to become Edaiken (crown Princess), a title given to all heir apparent before their ascension to the throne. She was the daughter of Oba Ewuare who reigned as the 13th Oba of Benin Kingdom from 1440AD-1473AD, in modern-day Nigeria.
Till this day, every prince on his coronation to become the Edaiken of Benin (crown prince) must pay homage to the ancestral spirit of Princess Edeloyo at Ogbe Edeloyo on his way to Edaiken Palace.
