The Federal Government has appointed Oba of Benin, Ewuare II as the chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, two years after the institution has been without a Chancellor.

The university, is the largest in Nigeria with over 120,000 students, cutting across the various learning centres nationwide

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olufemi Peters, who announced this when the management staff of the institution paid a courtesy visit to the Oba on Friday in Benin City, Edo State, assured that the fortunes of the university would improve.

He said, “It is heartwarming to announce that the Oba is the new vice chancellor of the Open University. We are sure that his tenure will usher in good development for the school.

The reason why this university was established by the federal government is to bring tertiary education to as many Nigerians as possible, no matter where they are, whatever their circumstances or hindrances may be.

“We are in every state of the country, serving every area. We have over 120,000 students. It is the biggest university in the country.

Responding, His Royal Majesty, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, accepted his appointment and commended President Muhammadu Buhari for finding him worthy of the position.

He promised to bring his wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of his duties and leverage on his experience during his diplomatic sojourn towards improving teaching and learning in the University with the support of the management team.

“When I was first informed about my appointment, I was very happy.
We thank God almighty for this recognition of the work we are doing in Benin Kingdom. We hope to hope to bring our experience in piloting the affair of the institution.

“I am most grateful to the Commander-in-Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari for deeming it fit to appoint me as Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria”, Oba Ewuare II said.

Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of some literature of the National Open University of Nigeria by the Management of the school to the Oba.
