The ousted central bank chief was arrested “for some investigative reasons,” the domestic intelligence office said in a statement Saturday afternoon.
The State Security Service on Saturday afternoon said it took into custody the dismissed Central Bank of Nigeria chief Godwin Emefiele
Mr Emefiele was arrested “for some investigative reasons,” the SSS said in a statement around 3:00 p.m.
The domestic intelligence office admonished the media to report developments around Mr Emefiele carefully, apparently alluding to a previous inaccurate report that circulated about Mr Emefiele’s arrest.
Mr Emefiele is expected to face questioning and potential prosecution for his handling of the nation’s top banking institution, including claims about economic sabotage previously raised against him by the SSS.
Mr Emefiele had denied any wrongdoing, but President Bola Tinubu nonetheless ordered his removal from office to allow a clearer atmosphere for administrative probe and reforms at the central bank.
