A Federal High Court in Kano has nullified the Kano State Emirate Law 2024, which had dissolved the five Emirates in Kano State.
The court invalidated all actions taken by the Kano State Government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law, which was used to dethrone the 15th Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, along with four others.
In his ruling on Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman ordered the parties to maintain the status quo, effectively reversing the Kano government’s actions.
Previously, the Kano House of Assembly had repealed the law that established the 15th Emir and four additional emirate councils – Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya – under the former governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
The current governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, had enforced the repealed law, dethroning Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano to reinstall the dethroned 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.
Aminu Babba Danagundi, a kingmaker in the former Kano emirate and the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, challenged the state government’s actions. Represented by his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), he asked the court to declare the law null and void.
