Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election, has called on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking to journalists at his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi described Nigeria as being on the brink of failure and stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law. He urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu promptly, citing court rulings that granted him bail.
“My stance on Nnamdi Kanu is that there is no justification for his continued detention, especially as the courts have granted him bail. The government must obey the court. The rule of law is a crucial asset that we must uphold and respect. I also urge the federal government to ensure that all those in similar conditions are released. We are in a democracy, and we should not act arbitrarily or outside the law.
I want to use this opportunity to call for the release of all those detained due to protests or freedom of speech, whether they are freedom fighters, End SARS protesters, or journalists. They should all be released immediately.
We are a democratic country, and people have constitutional rights to express themselves freely and to protest peacefully. We must listen to those who are unhappy; that is the essence of democracy. We should stop acting dictatorial and recognize that this is a democratic country.”
