A family’s home in Colorado Springs was severely damaged early Wednesday morning, July 3, when their dog accidentally started a fire.
While the family was asleep, the dog was sniffing around boxes left on the stove and accidentally turned on a burner.
The fire ignited on the stovetop just before 4:45 a.m., quickly spreading and triggering the smoke alarms and the family’s Apple HomePod “high heat” alert, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
The male homeowner managed to extinguish the flames before anyone was seriously injured.
Firefighters arrived soon after to assist the family and investigate the incident.
Reviewing the home surveillance footage from the kitchen, firefighters were stunned by what they saw.
The footage showed the family’s dog standing on its hind legs to sniff the boxes. Moments later, flames erupted from the stovetop.
The dog had inadvertently pressed a burner knob, igniting the boxes as it walked away, the fire department’s video revealed.
“After discussing with the homeowners and examining their security footage, we found that their dog got curious and accidentally turned on the stove, which had boxes on it,” Colorado Springs fire officials stated.
The male homeowner who extinguished the fire was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No other people or pets were injured, officials confirmed.
The fire, however, caused extensive damage, leaving the family homeless.
