In a recent public statement, Kenneth Okonkwo, the former spokesman for the opposition Labour Party’s presidential campaign council, announced his resignation from the Labour Party. He expressed deep concerns about the current state of political leadership and the direction in which the party is heading.

Okonkwo began by reaffirming his unwavering commitment to a better Nigeria, emphasizing his vision of a country built on equity, justice, and fairness, where every citizen has the opportunity to aspire to any position without prejudice based on ethnicity, religion, or other primordial sentiments.

Highlighting the inadequacies of the current major political parties, APC and PDP, Okonkwo criticized their combined leadership for crippling Nigeria’s progress. He lamented the country’s decline in economic, political, and social indices, leaving the populace with no hope for the future.

Okonkwo stressed the need for a solid political party with a grassroots base that could produce leaders of integrity and character. He emphasized that the current issues stem from a lack of internal democracy within parties, which has led to the proliferation of incompetent and corrupt leaders.

He called for a decisive, selfless leader who would boldly and bravely secure electoral victories without resorting to corrupt practices. Okonkwo expressed his earnest search for such a leader, one with the charisma and bravery to mobilize the people and sustain electoral victories.

Reflecting on the 2023 general election, Okonkwo recalled the efforts made to liberate Nigeria from corrupt leaders, only to have the victory stolen. He criticized the judiciary for failing to protect democracy and emphasized the need for people to take their destiny into their own hands to ensure that the rightful leaders are sworn into office.

Discussing his experiences with the Labour Party, Okonkwo shared his disillusionment with the party’s current state. He noted that despite high hopes for the Labour Party and its potential to address Nigeria’s problems, the party failed to build a solid base and provide clear direction. He expressed disappointment in Peter Obi’s leadership, stating that Obi did not fulfill his promises to strengthen the party and solve Nigeria’s issues.

Okonkwo announced his decision to disassociate himself from Peter Obi and the Labour Party, stating that his loyalty to Obi could no longer be guaranteed. He clarified that his decision was not motivated by any desire to join APC or PDP but was driven by his commitment to the Nigerian people and their aspirations for a better future.

Concluding his statement, Okonkwo emphasized the importance of good governance in avoiding protests and unrest. He asserted that Nigeria must regain its greatness, regardless of the resistance from corrupt leaders, and reaffirmed his dedication to fighting for a better Nigeria.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
