Former federal legislator Sam Onuigbo has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his significant contributions to the South-East region, urging for continued support to further his efforts.
In an interview with journalists in Umuahia on Friday, Mr. Onuigbo praised President Tinubu for signing the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) bill into law. He referred to the SEDC as a “gift to the South-East,” emphasizing its potential to address the lingering effects of the civil war and empower the region through education and development initiatives.
“President Tinubu has made commendable strides in the South-East; his efforts should be acknowledged, encouraged, and celebrated,” Onuigbo stated.
The former legislator recognized the contributions of past leaders but argued that none had achieved as much as President Tinubu in the region. Onuigbo, who represents the South-East on the Board of the North-East Development Commission, noted that the region had been waiting over 54 years for the opportunity provided by the SEDC, since the end of the civil war.
Onuigbo also praised Tinubu’s broader nation-building efforts and called on the people of the South-East to recognize and support his initiatives.
“During President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, the South-East had five Senate presidents over eight years, as well as a deputy Senate President for 12 years and a deputy speaker. However, despite these, we were unable to establish a dedicated commission to address the civil war’s devastation,” Onuigbo noted.
He highlighted the significance of President Tinubu’s approval of the SEDC bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and other legislators. Onuigbo also pointed out Tinubu’s achievements in the region since taking office on May 29, 2023, including the appointment of a service chief and a deputy speaker, alongside other key appointments.
“We are seeing numerous appointments coming from him. When someone is doing well, the right thing to do is to encourage them to achieve even more,” Onuigbo concluded.
