Augustine Eguavoen has officially stepped down as the interim coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, following a brief tenure that included two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The decision was announced immediately after the Super Eagles played a goalless draw against Rwanda on Tuesday in Kigali.
In an interview with OwnGoalNigeria at the Kigali Airport, Eguavoen revealed that his mandate was limited to overseeing the Eagles’ matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda in the ongoing qualifiers for AFCON 2025.
“I was given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys and I want to thank the leadership of the NFF and all the players for their discipline and hard work,” Eguavoen said.
Reflecting on his role, Eguavoen mentioned that he was uncertain about the upcoming match against Libya but expressed his willingness to assist the new coach in preparation. “I can’t talk about Libya because I haven’t been told anything yet. However, if there’s a new coach, I can provide inside information to help us overcome Libya. No team is a pushover, but with the spirit these boys have shown, I believe we have a bright future ahead,” he added.
During his time in charge, Eguavoen led the Super Eagles to a convincing 3-0 victory over Benin Republic last Saturday, followed by a 0-0 draw in Rwanda. His departure leaves the Nigerian Football Federation with the task of finding a permanent replacement ahead of future AFCON qualifiers.
