The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its fight against corruption. Musa Aliyu, chairman of the ICPC, made this known during the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) members’ interactive forum held in Abuja on Thursday.
Aliyu revealed that within the past 24 hours, the commission had successfully recovered N4 billion that had been stolen by public officeholders. He emphasized the potential of AI and other technological solutions in promoting accountability and good governance.
“Technology, particularly AI, has the ability to expose corrupt practices without bias. In the last 24 hours, we have recovered N4 billion of public funds diverted into private accounts,” Aliyu stated.
He expressed alarm over the vast amounts of money being misappropriated, adding that many individuals were hoarding billions of naira for personal gain. He stressed the need for a more systematic approach to address corruption, particularly in public procurement, through the adoption of technology-driven processes like blockchain and data analytics.
Aliyu also urged for preventive strategies, such as civic engagement and public education, to combat corruption effectively. He called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Whistleblower Protection Act to safeguard those who expose corrupt practices.
Muhuyi Magaji, chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, echoed Aliyu’s sentiments, stating that fighting corruption is a collective responsibility. He emphasized the importance of public participation in the anti-corruption fight.
Demola Bakare, acting director of public enlightenment and education at ICPC, encouraged stakeholders to tackle corruption without bias and to understand the commission’s mandate fully, likening the fight against corruption to a marathon that requires perseverance.
The ICPC reaffirmed its commitment to using technology and collaboration to restore transparency and accountability in governance.
