In a pre-election security operation, the Nigeria Police Force has arrested two political thugs in separate overnight raids across Edo State. The arrests, made on the eve of the governorship election, underscore the force’s efforts to curb electoral violence in the state.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed the details in a press statement on Saturday, September 21. According to the report, police operatives recovered three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols and a locally made gun from the suspects during the raids.

“The Nigeria Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb electoral violence in Edo State with the arrest of two political thugs, namely Edwin Obanor, 43, and Audu Tajudeen, 41, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party from Ugbogbo Quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo,” Adejobi stated.

The arrests followed a tip-off that armed individuals were planning to disrupt the election. Obanor, the leader of an armed group, was apprehended at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m., while Tajudeen was arrested in Igara Akoko, Edo. Upon searching their belongings, the police discovered three cut-to-size pistols on Obanor and a locally made gun on Tajudeen.

“These arrests are a testament to the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process,” Adejobi said. He emphasized that the police, alongside other security agencies, will not tolerate any form of violence or unrest during the election.
