Questions Governor’s Commitment to Democracy Following Election Defeat and INEC Visit
Renowned socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has fiercely criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki after his public dissatisfaction with the results of the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, 2024. The election saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, emerge as the winner, a result Governor Obaseki appeared to contest.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that Okpebholo secured victory in 11 local government areas, defeating his main rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who won 7 local government areas. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) did not win in any areas. Okpebholo gathered 291,667 votes, outpacing Ighodalo’s 247,274 votes, while Akpata finished with 18,737 votes.
In a dramatic turn of events, Governor Obaseki made an unexpected visit to the INEC collation center in the early hours of Sunday morning, reportedly to monitor the results. However, his presence was cut short when he was escorted out by security personnel led by Deputy Inspector General Frank Mbah at approximately 4:10 a.m.
Following Obaseki’s objections to the election results, Aisha Yesufu took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), delivering a sharp critique of the governor’s stance.
“Yes, Obaseki is now concerned about democracy? Can someone share a video of him speaking about democratic principles?” she wrote, sarcastically referencing Obaseki’s tenure.
Yesufu also pointed out several controversies from Obaseki’s time in office, stating: “This is the same Obaseki who refused to swear in 14 Edo House of Assembly members for four years, who didn’t fully appoint judges, and who got his Deputy Governor impeached. Now, he’s talking about democracy being under attack?”
The post sparked significant online debate, with many echoing Yesufu’s sentiments regarding the Governor’s recent actions.
