An Area Court in Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, has dissolved the Islamic marriage between Toyin Ajibola and Bashirat Mohammed due to financial challenges. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, September 25, by Judge Hammad Ajumonbi, who cited the husband’s inability to provide financial support as the main reason for the dissolution.

While delivering the judgment, Judge Ajumonbi acknowledged that although Mr. Ajibola expressed love for his wife, it was clear that Mrs. Mohammed needed to move forward with her life rather than remain in a strained marriage. The court, therefore, dissolved the union and granted custody of the couple’s three children to Mrs. Mohammed.

The court also ordered Mrs. Mohammed to observe the traditional three-month iddah (waiting period) before she can remarry. Additionally, Mr. Ajibola was instructed to provide for the children’s feeding within his financial capacity. The judge emphasized that Mr. Ajibola should have unrestricted access to his children, and that Mrs. Mohammed must make them available whenever their father requests.

Earlier, Mrs. Mohammed had requested the divorce, citing financial struggles and her husband’s irresponsibility as the primary reasons for seeking separation. “I want the court to grant me a divorce so I can have peace of mind,” she said.

Mr. Ajibola, however, expressed his desire to remain married despite his financial challenges. “I have been trying hard to provide for my family, but it’s been difficult. It pains me that I cannot afford to visit them since they left,” he explained.
