A clergyman in Osun State, Apostle Niyi Peter, was brought before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo on Thursday, facing charges of defaming renowned gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known by her stage name, Omije Ojumi, through social media.
Peter is being tried on a three-count charge after allegedly posting a photo of Akinnaanu online, with the derogatory caption “prostitute song,” which outraged her fans and fellow gospel musicians.
During his appearance before Magistrate Dr. Olusegun Ayilara, the charge sheet revealed that, “On or about April 2024, at Oke-Odo Area, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, you, Apostle Niyi Peter, defamed the character of Bunmi Akinnaanu, a.k.a. Omije Ojumi, by posting her picture and tagging it ‘prostitute song’ via your WhatsApp account.”
Additionally, Peter is accused of sending a threatening voice message to Akinnaanu, stating that she “will perish and never rise again.”
The charges allege that Peter’s actions could lead to a breach of peace by falsely damaging Akinnaanu’s reputation, violating sections 373, 88, and 249(D) of the Osun State Criminal Code.
Peter pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer, Mr. Okobe Najite, requested that the court grant him bail. In response, Magistrate Ayilara set bail at N1 million, with two sureties who must be civil servants.
The case has been adjourned until Tuesday, October 22, 2024, for further hearing. In the meantime, Pastor Mike Ademisoye Babamojigbare has urged both parties to seek an amicable resolution.
