Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, recently joined global leaders in Athens, Greece, for a Leadership Dialogue focused on governance. The event brought together former Presidents, Prime Ministers, senior government officials, military chiefs, academics, and sports personalities to discuss critical issues around democracy, security, and the economy in today’s world, with an emphasis on lessons for future leaders.
During his presentation, Obi highlighted the challenges facing Africa, including insecurity, corruption, poverty, youth unemployment, and inequality. He noted that despite the continent’s vast human and material resources, many of its needs remain unmet due to a lack of robust global governance. He called for urgent attention to be given to collective security, poverty alleviation, and addressing inequality.
“African nations, especially Nigeria and Congo, are plagued by extreme poverty, with over 60% of their populations living in unacceptable conditions. Non-state actors have taken over security in some countries, further destabilizing the region,” Obi remarked.
He urged future African leaders to take bold and transformative actions in areas such as health, education, and economic development. He emphasized the need for African governments to confront insecurity, tackle corruption, and invest in critical sectors to lift their citizens out of poverty and reduce societal inequalities.
Obi concluded by reaffirming his commitment to Nigeria’s progress, stating that with its resources, Nigeria has the potential to become a beacon of development and security in Africa.
“A New Nigeria is POssible,” he declared.
