Gani Adams, leader of the Yoruba people, has issued a powerful open letter to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to address the growing concerns of Nigerians. Adams, representing over 65 million Yoruba from the South-West, including states like Edo, Delta, Kwara, and Kogi, emphasized the vast blessings of natural and human resources in Nigeria but lamented the country’s mismanagement since independence.
Adams expressed disappointment in Tinubu’s leadership, noting that many Nigerians had placed their hopes in him during the 2023 elections, expecting a better performance than his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. However, Adams stressed that Tinubu has failed to meet these expectations. He highlighted the sharp rise in fuel prices and the naira’s depreciation, questioning the reforms initiated under Tinubu’s leadership as both President and Petroleum Minister.
He further criticized the alarming insecurity plaguing Nigeria, pointing out that kidnapping and violence have worsened under Tinubu’s administration. Adams questioned the effectiveness of Tinubu’s key security personnel, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Army Staff, in curbing these challenges.
Adams also condemned the crackdown on protesters and civil society organizations, pointing out the irony of Tinubu, once a mobilizer for change, now treating protests as criminal acts. He called the recent increase in fuel prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) a “brutal assault” on Nigerians, accusing the administration of being indifferent and insensitive to the people’s struggles.
Adams warned that the rising economic hardship could lead to widespread unrest, urging Tinubu to reverse these policies before it’s too late. He emphasized that Nigeria is greater than any individual, drawing parallels to Adolf Hitler’s destructive rule in Germany.
Concluding his letter, Adams reminded Tinubu of his campaign promises and urged him to reflect on whether his reforms are truly benefiting Nigerians. He called for immediate action to reverse the current trends and alleviate the suffering of millions of citizens.
