The Lagos State Government has announced plans to prohibit the use of single-use plastics and sachet water starting January 2025. This was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a stakeholders’ workshop on Thursday, October 3, focused on enforcing the ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics (SUPs) in packaging.
Wahab stated that the initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to introduce policy guidelines for managing plastic waste, with the ultimate goal of fostering a healthier and more sustainable environment.
Despite this, stakeholders have called for a phased implementation of the ban rather than an immediate one. They believe a gradual approach will ensure better compliance and ease the burden on businesses during the current economic challenges.
