The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that only individuals under the age of seven are exempt from facing legal charges in court.

In an interview with Channels TV, Adejobi explained that anyone over the age of seven may face legal proceedings if they are found to be in violation of the law. His comments came in response to public concerns over the recent arraignment of 67 minors in Abuja, who were charged with alleged treason and destruction of public property during the End Bad Governance protests.

During the interview, Adejobi said, “Under the law, those who are not criminally liable are those below the age of seven. Once you are older than seven, you can be charged in court. The process, however, must follow specific legal procedures.”

He further noted, “None of those charged are younger than seven; the youngest is about 13. Being 13 doesn’t mean you’re exempt from court proceedings. According to the Children and Young Persons Act, we are permitted to charge minors to court in certain cases.”

Adejobi added that the charges were filed on behalf of the Federal Government, stating, “The police have taken decisive action in this matter.”
