The Edo State Government has announced a partnership with Donovan Lombard, a South African aviation company, to establish an assembly plant for light aircraft in Benin City. This initiative will also include training programs for pilots, mechanics, and other aviation professionals.

The State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, revealed this development on Thursday during a ceremony at the Benin Airport to officially launch the collaboration.

Speaking at the event, Governor Okpebholo expressed optimism about the project, describing it as a milestone for Edo State. He said:

> “This is a groundbreaking initiative for the people of Edo. I had the opportunity to fly one of the aircraft, and the experience was incredibly comfortable. During my campaign, I pledged to foster the development of Edo State, and this marks the beginning of that transformation.

> “This partnership will result in the establishment of an assembly plant where our youths can acquire critical skills. It represents a significant investment in Edo State, and my administration is committed to supporting this endeavor to ensure maximum benefits for our citizens.

> “This initiative aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. We will fund the training programs, reduce unemployment, and create wealth across the state. All three Senatorial Districts in Edo will benefit from this landmark development.”

The governor added that his administration would ensure the aviation company receives the necessary support to achieve its goals.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Donovan Lombard, Ehis Odia, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, citing the governor’s visionary leadership and commitment to advancing Edo’s aviation sector.

> “Edo State has a rich history in aviation, and this partnership is aimed at revitalizing the sector. We plan to establish a factory at the Benin Airport for the assembly of light aircraft and introduce training programs tailored to secondary and technical school students.

> “Our goal is to change the narrative around aviation in Nigeria, demonstrating that it is not exclusive to the wealthy but an essential mode of transportation accessible to all. Edo State will become the first state in Nigeria where aircraft are assembled locally.”

He further noted that the project would include pilot training and encourage the formation of aero-clubs in schools, laying the foundation for a more robust aviation culture in Edo State.
