Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of the Islamist-led rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has condemned Israel’s recent incursions into Syrian territory, accusing it of violating the 1974 armistice agreement.
Al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, led the HTS forces that recently ousted President Bashar al-Assad. He criticized Israel for its incursion into southern Syria this week but admitted that the country is too drained from years of conflict to retaliate militarily.
The United Nations also accused Israel of breaching the armistice agreement after Israeli forces entered the UN-patrolled buffer zone in the Golan Heights last weekend. Israeli troops claimed additional land, pushing their positions to within 25 kilometers of Damascus.
Israel, which has occupied much of the Golan Heights since 1974, justified its actions as self-defense amidst political instability in Syria following Assad’s fall. Since Sunday’s overthrow, Israel has launched extensive airstrikes, targeting Syrian military assets and reportedly destroying nearly all of Syria’s air and naval defenses, according to a war monitor.
In a statement shared on HTS’s Telegram channel on Saturday night, Al-Sharaa condemned Israel’s actions, stating:
“The Israelis have clearly crossed the disengagement line in Syria, which threatens a new and unjustified escalation in the region. The general exhaustion in Syria after years of war and conflict does not allow us to enter new conflicts.”
The developments mark a new phase of instability in the region as Syria grapples with the fallout of Assad’s overthrow and Israeli military actions.
