The Nigerian Police Force has apprehended 17 individuals suspected of involvement in the gruesome killing of Uromchi Okorocha, who was accused of witchcraft in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, January 5, 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the suspects allegedly set Okorocha ablaze after accusing him of causing multiple deaths through alleged spiritual means.

“On January 3, 2025, operatives from the Ebonyi State Command arrested 17 suspects linked to the murder of Uromchi Okorocha, who was accused by local youths of engaging in witchcraft and spiritual activities that allegedly led to the death of several individuals,” Adejobi stated.

The suspects reportedly mobilized, apprehended the victim, and executed him in a case of jungle justice before police operatives from the Unwana Division arrived at the scene. Despite their efforts, the mob had already killed and set Okorocha on fire.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, strongly condemned the act, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable. “This incident underscores the dangers of taking the law into one’s hands. Citizens must always report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence,” the IGP said.

The police assured the public that all suspects involved would face the full weight of the law as part of ongoing efforts to curb jungle justice and ensure justice for victims of violent crimes.

The IGP reiterated the Force’s commitment to upholding public safety and called on citizens to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could prevent future incidents of mob violence.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its mission to create a safe and lawful society where justice prevails,” the statement concluded.

The suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
