The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has called for strengthened collaboration between the military and other security agencies to combat crime and ensure lasting peace in the state.

The governor made the appeal on Sunday during the 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA) event hosted by the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Benin. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Gani Audu, Governor Okpebholo commended the military for its significant role in ensuring peace and security, particularly during the festive season.

“The 4 Brigade’s support and cooperation provided a secure environment that allowed the peace-loving people of Edo State to celebrate Christmas and New Year freely,” he said.

He also praised the brigade for fostering peaceful coexistence with its host community, which has boosted public confidence and ensured the safety of lives and property. “We solicit more support and cooperation to build on these successes,” the governor added.

Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to other security agencies in the state for their unwavering collaboration with the military. He also highlighted WASA as an important tradition that allows soldiers and officers to unwind and interact with their families and civilians in a relaxed environment.

Brigade Commander Highlights WASA’s Cultural and Professional Significance

Speaking at the event, the Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. Ebenezer Oduyebo, described WASA as a long-standing military tradition dating back to the Second World War, when West African armies celebrated their cultural heritage at the end of each year.

“WASA connects the barracks community to its cultural roots, reminds the older generation of village life, and introduces the younger generation to their heritage,” he explained.

Brig.-Gen. Oduyebo emphasized that the brigade achieved its training objectives for 2024, focusing on professionalism and regimentation. He noted that WASA fosters unity among soldiers and their families while showcasing the brigade’s achievements.

Call for Greater Synergy Among Security Agencies

Maj.-Gen. Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, reiterated the importance of collaboration between the military, other security agencies, and the host community. Represented by Brig.-Gen. Beyidi Martins, Maj.-Gen. Onubogu urged for greater synergy in 2025 to tackle security challenges effectively.

The event featured various cultural performances, including traditional dances, a tug of war, and the inspection of military units. Attendees were also treated to a bonfire, food, and the ceremonial beating of the retreat, creating a vibrant atmosphere that celebrated unity and tradition.

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace and security across Edo State.
